WH Smith Newton Abbot & Camborne

Project details:

  • Lift Modernisation
  • Goods Lifts

WH Smith is one of the UK’s best-known retailers specialising in the sale of books, stationery and magazines. Having been formed in 1792, the company holds the title of being the world’s first retail chain and now has over 1,100 stores across the UK, in travel and high street locations.

Jackson are very proud of our long-standing relationship with WH Smith and we were recently asked to tender for the lift modernisations in two of their smaller stores, one located in the market town of Newton Abbot, Devon and the other in Camborne,
Cornwall.

The branch in Newton Abbot, a converted residential building, is served by a back-of-house 4-stop traction goods lift that runs between the basement and top floor stockrooms, and the shop floors. The store in Camborne shares a similar layout, however, this time featuring only a 3-stop traction lift, again reserved primarily for goods.

In both cases, the projects related to the installation of new lift controllers, lift car door operators, car operating panels and landing signalisation. We completely rewired the lift shaft and installed up-to-date car positioning sensors.

Jackson local engineers, working from our Bournemouth location, undertook each of the modernisations. As we finished each job, our engineers undertook the necessary safety and quality testing requirements, before each of the goods lifts were returned to service.
