Waverley Mall, Edinburgh City Centre

Project details:

  • Lift Modernisation
  • Goods Lifts
  • Hydraulic

Situated in Edinburgh’s city centre and adjacent to Waverley Bridge, Princes Street, Waverley Mall opened in 1984 and was subsequently refurbished several times, prior to a major update in 2016. The Mall, formerly Waverley Market, is a 2- storey underground shopping mall with an open-air rooftop plaza and marketplace that features authentic street food. The Mall has a wide range of well-known stores and restaurants, and periodically becomes a venue for live events.

Although below street level, goods still have to be moved between the floors and loading bays, this is assisted by the Mall’s hydraulic goods lifts, which were becoming unreliable. To address this, the Mall’s Facility Managers decided to modernise the hydraulic drive and lift control systems to bring them up-to-date and, at the same time, improve energy efficiency.

The Jackson team operating from our Glasgow offices were asked to tender for the modernisation work which initially related to one goods lift. Following site surveys and a detailed tender submission, Jackson were awarded the modernisation contract.

The project involved our local installation team removing the failing equipment and replacing it with a new energy-efficient integrated hydraulic control and drive system and shaft wiring.

Following on from a successful modernisation project, Jackson were awarded the contract to modernise a further single goods lift, which took place over the 2022 summer period.
