Originally founded in 1883, Cardiff University has become one Britain’s leading research universities and ranked as the 13th largest university in the UK. With over 30 different facilities catering for 33,510 enrolled students everything always has to function correctly.
With the wide range of buildings the University manages, unreliable lifts are the very last thing the University’s facilities managers want to experience and very much the case for their flagship facility, the Cochrane Building on the Heath Park Campus. Built in 2011, the Cochrane building incorporates a clinical skills centre, high-technology medical simulation laboratories and a library.
For some time, the original MRL lifts installed in the Cochrane building were proving to be unreliable and technically problematic, Jackson were asked to propose a cost-effective solution to overcome the technical issues. As we had been maintaining these lifts since the original manufacturer’s warranty ran out, our local engineers were only too aware of the issues. These principally orientated around the lift controllers’ CANBus network.
With the gained experience of the problems, Jackson proposed an upgrade of the lift controllers, door operators and the other necessary supporting works linked to the CANBus networking.
After submitting a detailed cost proposal and time frame, Jackson were awarded the contract to undertake the work.
Jackson local engineers undertook the modernisation, working on one lift at a time and staggering the work to ensure continuous lift availability. As we finished each lift, our engineers undertook the necessary safety and quality testing requirements before each lift was returned to service.
