Lift modernisation work for Marks & Spencer (M&S)
Across the UK and for well over a decade, Jackson have proudly been undertaking multiple lift modernisation projects for Marks & Spencer (M&S), and this has continued throughout the current year.
Lift modernisation work for M&S is competitively tendered. Tenders are referenced against completed M&S projects undertaken by all tendering parties to validate Health & Safety (H&S) compliance, quality of work, and adherence to agreed completion dates.
Recently, Jackson tendered for another lift modernisation at M&S Hedge End, this time for a hydraulic back-of-store goods lift that was beginning to show signs of unreliability. The lift survey was undertaken by one of our local Sales Engineers, operating out of our Wimborne office in Dorset, who was familiar with the store as a result of our previous work. With the survey completed, we submitted and subsequently won the contract for the lift modernisation.
M&S Hedge End is one of the company’s larger stores, providing customers with fashion goods, homeware, a 26,000 sq. ft. food hall, opticians, and an M&S café. The store is laid out over two storeys and is located in Southampton’s Hedge End retail park.
One of our earlier projects at the store was to modernise the main scenic lift, which is located adjacent to the store’s escalators. Our Wimborne-based lift modernisation team undertook and completed the modernisation, which included new safety, mechanical, electrical, and control equipment being installed. During the works, the lift was fully barriered off to protect M&S customers, staff, and our employees. To minimise inconvenience, customers were redirected to the escalators for travel between the ground and first floor.
The modernisation of the hydraulic goods lift included a new hydraulic tank, valve, motor, pump, lift controller, car operating panel, landing pushes, and indicators. Now completed, the goods lift is more energy efficient and is performing reliably—an essential requirement of any retail store where frequent stock movement is imperative.
