Atlantic House: Modernisation Hydraulic Valve Replacement
Originally built in the early 2000s, Atlas Business Park in Wythenshawe, South Manchester, features a range of large, low-rise office complexes. Among these is Atlantic House, a three-storey, 48,000 sq. ft. building.
Like many low-rise office blocks built in the early 2000s, hydraulic lifts were initially the preferred choice before MRL (Machine Room-Less) gearless traction motor lifts became dominant. The passenger lifts at Atlantic House utilise hydraulic systems and have undergone various modernisation projects over the years. However, as time passed since the previous upgrades, the general performance of the lifts had begun to decline, causing operational issues. An additional issue being experienced was the operational reliability of the car doors.
Following conversations with our local Sales Engineer, the decision was made to replace the hydraulic valve blocks. These components are critical as they regulate oil pressure, direction, and flow to the cylinder and ram that lifts, holds, and lowers the car.

Lift Car Door Gear
An important factor for lift users is the smoothness of travel as the lift car moves up and down in the shaft, something that can be seriously affected by a poorly performing hydraulic valve block, causing jerky movements.
A new high-quality valve block will improve ride quality and can improve overall efficiency, ultimately reducing energy consumption. To resolve the reliability issues associated with each of the lift’s door performance, the decision was made to replace the door operators.
As with all modernisation projects, our local Sales Engineer provided a detailed estimate for our customer to consider, along with a works programme that ensured that one lift was always available to passengers during our work.

Hydraulic Tank and Valve Block
Once the estimate was approved, Jackson was commissioned to replace the two failing hydraulic valve blocks and door operators. Our Manchester-based engineers carried out the works and also replaced the existing hydraulic fluids in the tanks with new fire-resistant, biodegradable oil.
Jackson takes great care to ensure all redundant and surplus oils are handled responsibly and transported to authorised waste disposal centres.
Upon finishing the mechanical work, Jackson engineers conducted rigorous testing before reinstating each lift into full service, ensuring a safe and smooth experience for the tenants of Atlantic House.
