Replacing an ageing platform lift to improve reliability at a Cornish school.

In all UK buildings, particularly those in the public sector, easy floor-to-floor access is an absolute requirement for people with limited mobility. For many schools, colleges, and universities, having a platform lift close to or adjacent to a flight of steps is the ideal solution to address this need.

An academy school and community college in Camborne, Cornwall, had been experiencing condition and reliability issues with a low-rise, partially enclosed platform lift. The lift is in one of the school’s busy corridors, adjacent to a flight of eight steps with a rise of 1.3m. While refurbishment options were considered to restore its usability, the school decided that a complete replacement would provide a longer life expectancy and reduce overall lifetime maintenance costs.

Following several conversations with the school’s management team and a site visit by one of our mobility specialists, Jackson provided a cost estimate for the installation of a new, partially enclosed platform lift capable of carrying a wheelchair user or standing passengers. The lift was designed to be fully enclosed at the ground floor level and open on all sides from its 1000 mm x 1480mm platform once stationary at the upper level and installed with through-type doors.

Following our budget submission and further conversations regarding installation timing, the school gave its approval to proceed with the removal of the existing, failing platform lift and the installation of the new one.

Local Jackson engineers, reporting to our Wimborne office, undertook the removal and installation work during the six-week summer break to minimise disruption. On completion, our engineers fully tested the lift, commissioning it for service, and initiated the new 12-month maintenance agreement.
