Otis GEN 2 Lift Modernisation, North London

Many of the UK’s care homes were built over two decades ago and are now approaching the time when property managers will be considering refurbishment and updating their passenger lifts. Invariably, this modernisation work will focus on the control systems and user interfaces to improve reliability and compliance with the latest standards, if this has not been addressed already.

A typical example of this kind of lift modernisation was one recently completed by Jackson engineers working in North London. The work was carried out in a three-storey residential care home located in Palmers Green, owned by the Skinners’ Almshouse Charity, and run by Chosen Care Group Limited.

At the time of its construction, Skinners Court had two Otis Gen 2 MRL lifts installed that were reaching a point where modernisation work was required to bring them up to date with regulatory standards and improve their ongoing reliability.

The contract for our work was awarded following a tender request specified by the care home’s management lift consultancy. To assist with our response and submission, a lift survey was conducted by one of our Sales Engineers. After various conversations and examples of several Otis Gen 2 modernisations Jackson have successfully completed, a decision was made to replace the original closed protocol lift controllers with new open protocol systems.

We were subsequently delighted to be asked to proceed with the modernisation work as tendered. Jackson engineers, operating from our London offices in Charlton, completed the works This included the installation of new in-shaft gearless machines, traction drive belts, lift controllers, car door open protocol VF door operator, car operating panels, landing pushes, and indicators. We additionally rewired the lift and shaft equipment and completed a partial lift car interior refurbishment.

During the modernisation period, our engineers worked closely with the care home’s management to ensure any disruption or noise disturbance to residents were kept to an absolute minimum.
